Part One - The Family

She belonged to a traditional family, the daughter of a diplomat and a renowned lawyer in Rio society. Him, a newsboy. The twenty-story building located in a prime area of the city looked more like a headquarters, surrounded by guards everywhere, after all, there lived illustrious people. The luxurious vehicle stopped for a few moments, obeying the time required by the traffic light, enough for her to observe that interesting young man from inside the car.

He was sitting in front of the newsstand, reading something, totally distracted that he didn't even notice his presence, however impressed her. The car makes a return a hundred meters ahead and when entering the parking lot of the building she takes one last look in the direction where she was minutes ago and see that distracted young man who so caught her attention.

In the spacious eight-hundred-square-meter apartment she lived, her ten-year-old younger brother and her parents. The harmonious coexistence created a wonderful atmosphere in the place, and from your room with a window to the avenue that passed in front, it was easy to observe everything. He saw the newsstand nearby that had always been there, but only now did it catch his attention.

 — Daughter, come here to help me!

 — Okay, mom!

 — There are so many things that I don't even know where to keep them all

― Also, it looks like you want to buy everything you see at the mall

 — Don't complain, think about how many people at this moment can't own half of what we have

 — I know, I'm sorry!

 — Well, I love shopping a lot!

 — Be quiet, kid!

 — Mom, she fought me!

 — Stop it, you two, can't you live side by side for a second without fighting?

It was a normal family like any other, without major problems, well structured, and solid emotionally. Well, at least until that moment. The school where the teenager studies is two blocks away and the driver takes her every morning. At sixteen years of age she never walked alone or on foot through the city streets, did not eat ice cream or juice at the corner cafeteria, as being the daughter of someone so important she could be a victim of kidnapping.

But that didn't mean that their preferences were different from other girls of the same age, it was just their sad reality. He had few friends, only Lorena and Fabricio, who affectionately called Fab, were his closest friends. He never dated, nor did he really know the taste of a kiss, he loved watching soap operas and reading the various love novels he received every month from his aunt Carla.

Who lives in São Paulo, she is usually a calm and patient young woman, but get out of your mind by staying just one minute next to the youngest, who takes you seriously, despite having a large stature, he was young and of love and passion, he only understands what he has read in the fantasy stories of fiction books. Her mother dreamed of seeing her concluding a law school, her father wanted Diplomacy for her to pursue her same career, but that was not part of his plans, after all, he did not want to become a slave to work like him.

But her ideal was to become a great writer, going against both expectations. His favorite subjects were history, grammar and writing, and he always got top marks in each one. Time passes quickly, next month will complete another spring and will be increasingly distant from adolescence and will take new steps towards maturity, where everything stops being fantasy and feelings appear strange to the heart, difficult to understand and to know how to deal with.

Time when the taste in relation to certain things is changed and old friendships are exchanged. He is seen as someone more responsible, and full of duties. The school where he spent part of his childhood will soon be left behind, giving way to a college full of strange people, with modern concepts. That do not always match the reality experienced at home with parents. Lana a beautiful girl with light and velvety skin, wavy brown hair, bright yellow eyes, will soon successfully complete high school.

And in a few months, I he will start his higher studies at a private college, the most expensive and renowned in Rio de Janeiro. To soon become a well-known lawyer, diplomat or, who knows, a successful writer. This, in fact, only time will tell.

Pedro, was a simple and absolute boy, from an unstructured poor family, resident of the Baixada Fluminense, in one of the several favelas that exist there. He spends the day selling magazines and newspapers at his uncle's stall, when customers don't show up, he sits in an old brown plastic chair, reading police pages in the local newspaper.

He no longer studies, stopped in the fifth grade of elementary school and doesn't even think about starting over. He speaks Portuguese dragged and mixed with slang commonly used by those who live on the hill. Your circle of friends is not the best. It involves simple people, with no certain future, uses the workplace to sell home-made snacks to earn extra change, never stole or killed anyone.

It is clean with the police and considers itself a survivor fighter in the jungle called wonderful city that. In his humble opinion there is nothing wonderful, just death and violence for all sides. In the late afternoon, he heads towards the wooden shacks, where he lives with his mother and three younger brothers, taking something for dinner.

He lives in the favela since he can be understood by people. living with all kinds of people, good and bad, honest and dishonest, but he never went the wrong way. Even coming from poverty, he was rich in good looks and dreamed of one day getting along in life. Taking off a crown full of money or winning the prize of the lottery that played every Saturday.

He is a flirt and the girls are always fighting for space to see who stays with him the longest. He had many dreams in childhood, but now he has no more, he understood that poor people survive by hardship. He wins with a fight and dies without leaving anything to anyone who cried beside his coffin.

Son of a bricklayer, he never saw his father happy or achieve great things, he was a failure like so many others there, however he did not think to give up a single goal that was one day to be happy in love. In the early hours he hears the funky sound coming from the clubs around, he avoids frequenting such environments so as not to get involved with anyone who has nothing good to offer.

Many have already died from walking on these tortuous paths where drugs roll loose. She had been passing by every morning for a long time, when she was driving back from school, but she had not noticed that boy. Always reading a newspaper, next to the traffic lights, in front of the building where he lived for more than five years. The driver stopped the vehicle in the same place, every day and almost at the same time, so close and his eyes never noticed his existence right there.

But good, finally, a novelty that would change the direction of your mediocre, empty and monotonous life. Now he found reasons to rejoice when it was time to return home, he even counted the hours and asked the driver not to be late, to be punctual, as he realized that the newsstand closed at noon.

From Monday to Friday, she passed inside that black car, with tinted windows, hidden from the eyes of anyone watching her. But on that particular day she dared to lower the glass and look more closely at those who learned so much to admire.

Perhaps this was your biggest mistake or success, depending on the point of view of those who will later judge you, but curiosity speaks louder and cannot be contained. You need to see him a little more closely, even for a few seconds, the long-awaited weekend arrives and staying at home is the only option for those who were unlucky enough to have a diplomat as their father.

Man, with little free time to take his family on a beach or take a trip, just any leisure. Again, he looked through the glass window, basked, by the cold weather. And through it he saw on the boardwalk many people who were walking from side to side. And a newsstand with your newsboy sitting there, reading the news of the day:

   — But what does he read so much about that damn newspaper? He seems hypnotized, he gets up a few times to serve the clientele and then he keeps his eyes fixed on this tireless reading!

  — What did you say?

  — Nothing, mom, I just thought out loud

  — Now you can look at the street and talk to yourself? I think you need to make a routine visit to the psychologist

  — Come on, mom, what a pointless idea!

  — And what form of expression was that, my daughter, are you talking to some classmate at school who speaks slang? I already told you to avoid those friendships!

  — Ah, mom, please take a break! This has nothing to do with it was just a way of expressing myself and you need to understand that young people talk like that today

  — Well know that we don't spend a fortune to give you the best education and, in the end see it expressing itself that way. Like a little girl from the slum. You belong to the elite of that country, so behave like one!

The conversation left a bad atmosphere between the two. Marta did not admit that Lana was not even remotely similar to the simple and humble people of the poorest classes of society, and that irritated the girl who would rather stay locked in her room than listen to them. always litanies

  — You belong to the elite of Rio, do not mix with these mediocre people with no future! —  replied his mother

Lana was aware of her parents' past, nor did they have a rich background, they were not born in a golden cradle as they demonstrated. Carlos Eduardo, his father, was ashamed of his relatives because they were all poor, he was born in the Northeast, he grew up eating white rice and green beans harvested in the fields.

Marta, his vixen mother, was a plague woman. Coming from the hinterland, he grew up eating sweet scraping with flour and drinking mud, since that region suffers a terrible drought that looks more like a curse. And now that they have turned the corner and conquered their position in society with great effort, they underestimate their roots. On the cell phone she talks to her best friend. and vent his discontent:

— I can't stand my mother's pressure anymore, Lorena, she is already crossing the line!

— Calm down, friend, she is only thinking about her future, she wants the best for you

— It's okay that she cares about me and wants the best for me, but then wanting to make me see poor people as garbage is unacceptable, mainly because, in doing so she belittles her own and Daddy's origins, after all, where they come from came, wasn't it from poverty?

— But, maybe that's why they fight so hard to avoid that you.

And Junior don't have to go through the same situation of misery that they did

— Okay, I agree, but you need to teach us how to disgust the poorest? My maternal and paternal grandparents are poor and we hardly ever visit them. Dad claims to be a very busy man and out of time, Mom hates the idea of going to Northeast to see them, claiming to hate that region. And do you know what the end result is? We get stuck in the drugs in this apartment without any leisure, we don't travel or walk, I hate it all!

 — My friend, see how things are: My parents are not as rich and important as yours, but we lead a wonderful life, and they taught us to love and respect our most humble grandparents and relatives, regardless of each one's financial situation. we love and respect them

  — See? That's what I'm talking to you about, my parents' attitudes are not correct and I get sick of it!

  — Because you and Junior are not going to spend a weekend with us there, will we be going there next Saturday? Oh really?

 — Gee, I'm going to talk to my parents!

 — Do it, then give me a position

 — Agreed, I'll do it!

The two friends agreed to talk again soon, Lana was going to talk about this proposal with her parents and ask for their approval to make the trip. In this story, the only thing that saddened her was having to take her younger brother along since the little boy usually made a report of everything. He saw his older sister do and reported to his mother.

But, if the price to pay was that, she would be willing to accept. After receiving their yes and the ardent commitment to take and care for the naughty. He leaves with Lorena and his family towards a farm located near Oysters River beach, a few kilometers from the capital of Rio.

The place was beautiful and nature could be enjoyed up close, transmitting peace and serenity to those who arrived there. Lana really needed to relax and that place was perfect for that. Standing on the shore, barefoot on the cold sand, she watches the sea and travels through the waves of her imagination. Passionate about literature, particularly poetry, she recites verses by Gonçalves Dias. Your favorite poet. Lorena, at her side, asks what she is talking about, as she doesn't understand poetry at all, she then explains in detail everything about the recited poem, and adds:

— This poem is by the poet Gonçalves Dias from Maranhão, by conscience he was born very close to the city in which my father, including Dad, told me a lot about him and showed me some of his works

— So, there is responsible for my best friend wanting so much to become a successful writer!

— A poet, to be more objective. Gonçalves Dias inspires me to create so many love poems, due to his story of forbidden passion

— Forbidden passion, Lana, explain that to me!

— Okay, let's sit here for a while, and I'll explain everything to you: “Antônio Gonçalves Dias was born on August 10, 1823, on the Boa Vista site, in the lands of Jatobá, fourteen leagues from Caxias.

He died at the age of forty-one in a shipwreck of the ship Ville Bologna. Location close to the region of low Atins, in Cumã Bay, municipality of Guimaraes. A lawyer by training, he is best known as a poet and ethnographer, being also relevant to Brazilian theater, having written four plays. He also had an important role as a journalist.

In this area, you can find a collaboration of his authorship in the Contemporary Magazine of Portugal and Brazil, from 1859 to 1865. He was the son of an unofficial union between a Portuguese trader and a mestizo, and he initially studied for one year with teacher José Joaquim de Abreu.

That was when he started working as a clerk and taking care of the bookkeeping of his father's store, who died in 1837. He started his studies in Latin, French and philosophy in 1835. When he was enrolled in a private school. He went to study in Europe, in Portugal, where in 1838 he finished his secondary studies and joined the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra.

In 1840, returning in 1845, after graduating. But before returning, still in Coimbra, he participated in the medieval groups of Literary Gazette and The Troubadour. Sharing the romantic ideas of Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculaneum and Antônio Feliciano de Castilho. Because he spent so much time outside his homeland, he was inspired to write Song of Exile and part of the poems of First Songs and Second Songs.

The Drama "Beatriz de Cenci", later rejected for its status as an "immoral" text by the Dramatic Conservatory of Brazil. It was still during this period that he wrote fragments of the biographical novel "Memories of Agapito guava", later destroyed by the poet himself, for containing allusions to people still alive.

In the year following his return he met what would be his great inspiring muse. Ana Amelia Ferreira Vale. Several of her romantic plays, including “Yet Once, Goodbye” were written for her. That same year he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, then the capital of Brazil, where he worked as a professor of history and Latin at Pedro II School. In addition to having worked as a journalist, contributing to several periodicals:

Journal of Commerce, Official Gazette, Afternoon Mail and Monarchy Sentinel, publishing chronicles, theatrical serials and literary criticism. In 1849 he founded the magazine Guanabara with Manuel de Araújo Porto Alegre and Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, which divulged the romantic movement of the time. In 1851 he returned to São Luís do Maranhão, at the request of the government to study the problem of public education in that state. Gonçalves Dias asked Ana Amelia in marriage in 1852.

But her family, by virtue of the writer's mixed ancestry, vehemently refuted the request. In the same year he returned to Rio de Janeiro, where he married Olympia da Costa.

Soon afterwards he was appointed an official of the Secretariat for Foreign Affairs. He spent the next four years in Europe conducting research for national education. Returning to Brazil, he was invited to participate in the Scientific Exploration Commission, which he traveled through almost the entire north of the country. He returned to Europe in 1862 for health treatment. With no results, he returned to Brazil in 1864 on the Ville de Boulogne, which was shipwrecked off the Brazilian coast; everyone was saved, except the poet, who was forgotten, dying in his bed, and drowned.

The accident occurred in the Low de Atins, near Tutóia, in Maranhão.”

— Wow, Lana, you like literature, huh friend?

— Wow, no, I know more about this literary for loving his poems

— Well, I'm a tapir in this matter, my friend

— It may be, but it is unbeatable, when it comes to mathematical calculations, the tapir becomes me!

While the two friends talked the time passed and the young man's mother spent the night in poor health, with complications from diabetes, and he had to run wildly through all the nearby hospitals to get a bed to hospitalize her. He had the help of some neighbors, such as Mr. João, who gave the car to take the elderly woman to be rescued. After much sacrifice, she was finally admitted to a hospital in the metropolitan region of Rio. But, the next morning, she is notified that she has a compromised clinical condition and needs to perform certain medical interventions to get improvements, but they must be performed in a private clinic.

— Now the animal will get it, Mr. João, how am I going to transfer the crown to a private clinic if I barely get the one for the beans that works at the newsstand?

 — It really is a complicated situation, my son!

— But I need to find a way to save the life of my crown, there must be a solution!

From that moment on, he began to seek help everywhere. Friends, neighbors, neighborhood merchants and even went to the city hall to ask the mayor and councilors for help, but the politicians did not even receive him. And as he insisted on speaking to them personally, the authorities expelled him and even beat him.

Disgusted, the residents got together and went to protest outside the mayor's official residence, requesting that he attend. But the clamor of the people was once again stifled by the police force that forcibly expelled them from there. Slightly was a well-known drug dealer in the Baixada that the law could not get his hands on. He was protected by the poor population of the favelas to whom he usually did many favors. As soon as he was informed of the situation of Pedro and his mother, he sent some of his men to meet him to take him to the smoking mouth where the rascal dug himself.

There, Slightly, proposed to help him save his mother's life, but in return he wanted to be able to count on him at a stop they were going to make the next day. Pedro was born there and knew well how things worked and he never got involved in any criminal action, that's why he was so targeted by Slightly. A new blood would be ideal for your plans, because if something went wrong and were caught it would not be targeted.

He would not be identified as a member of the drug trade and the police would not disturb the hill. In addition, as a first defendant, he would soon be released. But, right away, Pedro refuses the offer. He knows how things work in traffic, or you pay what you owe or lose your life. Her search, intensifying even more, does not reach positive results and the hospital has already called saying that the patient should leave the bed in a maximum of forty-eight hours.

With no way out, he goes to the house of White Hand one of several colleagues he had on the hill, I asked for strength. When explaining the difficult situation, he was in, he received the terrible answer that there is no way to help him. Returning to the shack where his younger siblings are is consumed by the doubt of how to solve that huge problem.

The place where he lived was a small rotten shack., rats strolled over and under the dirty floor and the huddle of boxes, old furniture and debris all around. In fact, misery would be frightened by so much poverty. Upon arriving, he was immediately approached by the brothers, asking him for something to eat, because, due to running around, trying to help his mother who was between life and death in a public hospital, she didn't even have time to go to work and get some change. But the time had to occupy Mr. João, asking him for something to satisfy the hunger of the little ones.

Bread, flour and some preserves were mixed with some eggs and there, dinner was ready, they ate and slept. He, however, could not sleep his eyes in concern. He was in danger of waking up to the news that his mother had died in the hospital due to lack of care. Closing the shack, he returned to the streets, walked for several hours at random, without a right direction, confused and not sure where to go. Sitting on a sidewalk near the alley that led to the mouth of smoke, where the drug dealer hides, he decides whether to go back and accept or not the proposal he made to him.

I was aware that whoever enters the life of crime can no longer get out, and trying to do so dies is a path of no return. It was midnight, everything was silent around him, he only heard hidden footsteps of the traffic watchers, those guys armed to the teeth that dominate the area and prevent the enemy's invasion.

They also protect the nest where the rest of the flock sleeps. He was aware that they were watching him, he was still there because they were certainly ordered to let him up, it was one in the morning when he made his final decision. Here was no other way. He would have to surrender and sell his soul to the traffic, damn it, the important thing was to save the crown. As you head towards the point where you would find it, it is soon followed closely.

Two, henchmen followed, armed to the teeth. All those young people came there to ask for help to solve some kind of problem and end up being held hostage by the trafficking, which helped them, but asks in return for their lives. There, they learned drug addiction and the pleasure of killing without the fear of dying. That will be his destiny, too, from now on:

 — I came to accept your proposal

 — Very well, then did you understand that this was the only solution to free your mother from death?

 — I got it, yes!

 — Okay, let's close the deal. As soon as dawn I will send someone, I trust to the hospital to transfer the lady your mother to a private clinic and provide everything necessary for her to be well. As for you, go with some of my boys to settle a stop

 — Man, I have no way to sell drugs or kill anyone

 — Man, none of us here seemed to have a way for this business, buddy, but today we do it very well

 — I only accepted this stop to help save my mother's life, but after I pay off my debt, I don't intend to stay in this anymore.

 — Very well, do your part in the deal and then I release you

The deal was for Pedro to go along with five bad guys to invade and kidnap a woman who would be on a farm, located on the oysters River beach, on the coast. Aware that his mother was already being transferred to a more appropriate place, where he would receive the necessary medical care. Pedro strictly follows the plan outlined by Slightly. In the company of five other elements. The place was a place by the sea, with a beautiful mansion and fruit trees as far as the eye can see. The bandits park nearby. After hiding the car in the nearby woods, they will carry out the mission they set out to do.

On the property were a couple, four teenagers aged twelve to seventeen, and a child. Also, in another house, a little away, certainly from the caretaker, there were also other people. Everyone was sitting at the table, having lunch, when the bandits arrived and played the terror. They easily dominated everyone present who showed no reaction. The fear overcame them and they became agitated, which was soon contained by one of the gang members who threatened them with death. That is if they were not silent, the intention was to take the young woman with fair skin and brown eyes, with wavy hair, to the hill.

There, traffickers will contact her family members and demand the ransom amount. None of those involved knew exactly who the girl was, nor where she came from, the mission was to take her to Slightly and they were determined to do so. Criminals wore a type of black mask that covered the entire head, leaving only the eyes in view, who was in charge of checking which of the girls present there had the characteristics according to the description the same as those made by the person responsible for the kidnapping.

It was Pedro, he looks at each one putting them upright and leaning against the wall, and looks at them closely. When he comes face to face with the one, he believes to be the chosen one, he paralyzes when he sees how brilliant his look is. He knew many women, even beautiful, but those eyes seemed to have a certain mystery. Some spell that mesmerized you for a few seconds. He then asks your name.

She doesn't answer, he insists, she moves her head negatively. Making clear the bold decision not to reveal his identity to the criminal. He squeezes her right arm tightly in an abrupt attempt to intimidate her, but she is a tough nut to crack and shows her that by giving her a strong kick in the legs. Anger the bandit slaps him in the face and holds his long curly hair tightly and exploding in fury he orders him to say his name right away. She resists, so one of the other elements points the gun at the smaller boy's head next to her and warns that she will shoot him in the head if she doesn't obey, and scared that something might happen to her younger brother identifies herself:

— Lana, my name is Lana, please don't hurt him!

The bandits then violently pull her by the arm and force her to go with them. Desperate, after the girl's abduction, Lorena's parents immediately call the police and warn about the kidnapping. Since they didn't even have the cadence to take their cell phones. After the police informed her mother about the incident, she reported it to her father and he immediately demanded that the Rio de Janeiro public security secretary take immediate steps to rescue his daughter, the silver colored car was flying on four wheels while the criminals fled in towards the Baixada Fluminense. Place where the dealer waited for the order.

The order given by the command of the military police was to surround all entrances and exits. From the coast to the entire length of the capital of Rio, nothing and no one would enter or leave without being monitored. They approach the city and notice a blitz just ahead, abandon the highway and enter a shoulder, Pedro calls Slightly and reports the situation.

He advises them to take a detour and do so, avoiding facing the police siege. Lana, being the daughter of an important man, is being the victim of kidnapping at the behest of someone who wants to demand a high ransom. The dealer who organized the operation was just the middleman, a small fish, the real responsible person should be someone who knew the girl's background well. It was inside her to be the daughter of an important person in Rio society, Marta disagrees with the husband's attitude because he believes that informing the police about the kidnapping was a mistake, as it put his daughter in danger:

  — Carlos Eduardo, in my opinion you made a tremendous mistake, alerting the police about this kidnapping

  — So, would you think it right that I crossed my arms and let these criminals take our daughter to who knows where, and do nothing?

  — We should first wait for the contact of the kidnappers and see what they demanded of us, if it is just money we pay and get her back alive, but now with the police siege I worry if there will be exchanges of fire and our daughter will not be in serious danger of be victimized along with these outlaws

 — Honey, we both made mistakes when we forgot who they are… And allowed them to go on this trip, completely unprotected, we were always very careful, Lana and Junior were never alone at the ice cream shop next door.

And now what have we done? We allow our children to travel without a single security to the coast

 — I'm feeling so guilty for all this!

 — Calm down, there is no point in whining, with faith in God everything will be fine, soon our boys are back, safe and sound

In reality, Carlos was as desperate as Marta, but he tried to hide his fear that something bad could really happen to Lana. He called the secretary of public security again and asked him heartily to order the commanders of the military and civil police to avoid direct confrontation with the criminals if they were cornered, remembering that such an action could cause the hostage's death.

The alert was passed on and the police were instructed, inside the car at high speed, the young woman experiences moments of panic and terror. She was constantly threatened by Negro pitch dark, who keeps talking nonsense all the time. Because of that, Peter who drives the vehicle.

They lose patience and start arguing, threatening each other. The alternative route they followed led them directly to the Baixada Fluminense, to the hill of the vulture, as the area where the offenders live is known. They leave the car on a deserted corner and go up to deliver the package to the dealer. The mission was successfully accomplished and Pedro believes he has fulfilled his part of the agreement:

 — Here is the order, I fulfilled my part as I promised

 — That's right, buddy, you really have that right, yes, go there

Lana was gagged and her hands were tied.

This was necessary because she looked like a tough jaguar, nobody could stop her inside the car, kicked and kicked everywhere, she looked like a demon, so she had to be immobilized. While talking to Slightly, Pedro remains wearing the mask, Lana can't see his face, but his eyes will be unforgettable. Well before she could imagine, she would get to know him better, he was already coming down the hill, when he saw the uproar in the alley. The car used in the hijacking was stolen and was not discarded. It was close by and those who had stayed at the site wrote down the license plate of the vehicle, they had been located, the hill was full of police.

The order given by the head of the drug trade was that everyone is preparing to defend the territory, sending bullets at the military. Pedro had no alternative, the way was to go back up the hill again and join the gang, going down at that moment would be suicide. It was fulfilling what the oldest people in the favela said, whoever enters the drug trade can never find the exit door again. He returns and remains in captivity, where he remained there with some thirty other armed men. The cops come forward and buckshot on them.

The siege is closing, the dealers send bullets, but the police do not fight back to avoid hurting the hostage. The plan is to make the bandits run out of ammunition and invade captivity, to catch them alive. There are more than thirty men fighting against the invaders. Even if only they fire and the enemies only protect themselves, they avoid making shots, several hours have passed and the stock of ammunition begins to empty. The shots diminish, the police perceive and advance, wearing vests, shields and all the protection apparatus.

They already know the exact location where the hostage is and now, they can fight back against criminals without taking any chances. The shooting begins, the bandits come out of hiding and expose themselves in an area far from the place where the captivity is. This time they fight back, bandits fall like flies on the floor. The residents hide inside their houses for fear of stray bullets, the whole place turns into a real war field, hell. Meanwhile, Pedro remains hidden with the hostage. Lightly and now only ten men, the rest went down to try to contain the advance of the PM and the special forces, but as one could imagine, they packaged in front of the military's weapons:

 — Dude, I think people are done, we're alone in this!

 — Stop being ominous, you shit, nobody, here you are afraid of dying, no, is it worth it? If they danced, so what? We are going to face this parade, everyone together with my brother!

 — Then, I'm not in death, thanks, my thing is to get out of this alive and well. You know what, I think we better give this tomboy back here to the guys and get out alive, better than dying like the others who have taken the worst down there!

 — Come on, sucker, do you have any idea who gave the order to get this cat there? It was big fish, buddy, and if we screw with the plan we dance, understand?

 — Your business is with that big fish, Slightly, mine was with you and I already settled, so don't even talk about me being forced to die to defend the interests of your boss there!

At this moment they hear the voice of the commander who tells them to go out and hand over the hostage.

Slightly determines the permanence of everyone in the place, Pedro disagrees and says in favor of the surrender.  But the drug dealer insists on fighting the police to the end and responds with large-caliber gun shots. Ostensive Police Battalion (BOP) surrounds the surroundings and does not fight back because of the young woman who remains with them.

Seeing that one of the bandits is being sensible in wanting the income and the others insist on putting their lives at risk, Lana, frightened, shows wanting to say something and her mouth gag. She, being abused, disagrees with their ignorance:

 — What the hell, does he alone have the ability to reason and see that it is impossible to face this bunch of armed police and still get out of here alive? Stop to think he's right, you don't stand a chance!

 — Stay in yours, don't get dirty!

Upon hearing the rude way in which Nego Pitch Dark treated the girl Pedro defends her and creates a bad climate with the partner of the crime:

 — What's yours, why do you keep arguing with the cat?

 — What, my brother, hurt you because, by any chance, you became like the slut?

The two fought a corporal fight and beat themselves up, to contain the brawlers' spirits, the boss shot him in the air, and gave them an ultimatum: Hand over the hostage or you will suffer the consequences. It turns out that they know how this type of negotiation ends, in the end they will be arrested or killed, and none of the conditions are pleasing to traffickers, who think they will come out unscathed.

Once again, the precipitous Negro Pitch dark responds to the military with a bullet and further complicates things, the commander is exhausted from trying to reach an agreement with the kidnappers, his desire is to invade the place and execute the cretins. However, this can cause the death of the girl, who is not just anybody but the daughter of a government man. Pedro realizes that they are cornered and plans to leave captivity and with Lana and surrender. Hand it over to the cops, try to escape from that situation alive. However, he understood that for that he would have to get rid of Slightly first. And the other cronies, because in no way will they agree with this idea. Thing they consider absurd.

He sat in some corner of the shack, next to Lana, who is again gagged and, taking advantage of a second of distraction from the others, tells him to stay firm. So as not to panic because you will see the guys so they can get out of there. She understands and closes her eyes. Right next to him was a portable machine gun with a loaded magazine, it belongs to Slightly who decided to take a look at the enemy's position. Through a small opening in the plank wall of the shack and for the first time, he left his favorite weapon aside. The criminals are distracted and the young man, determined to put an end to that situation, fires rounds of bullets at his cronies.

Lana only mixes her dread amid the screams of pain and the despair of criminals who are cowardly murdered by the traitor. Outside the military are apprehensive, do not understand what happens and are on standby. They wait for the end of the event they fear that the hostage is injured or dead, first there are a few seconds of silence.

Then they see one of the criminals leaving with their arms raised and beside her the kidnapped girl who asks the police not to shoot. Pedro surrenders and returns Lana to the police, he is dominated, thrown to the ground and handcuffed. Then they lift him up and are taken to the presence of the authority who commanded all that rescue operation. The miscreant remains with his face covered with that black mask.

Made of a velvety fabric from which it is only possible to see his eyes. The commander approaches and rips it off violently. His face is finally revealed and everyone present can identify him, including Lana. She is perplexed when she realizes that the criminal was, in fact, that young man from the newsstand located near the traffic lights of the avenue where she lives. Who every day takes advantage of the car stop to see him sitting in that brown chair, always reading her usual morning newspaper.

And who never realized how much she admired her, she was incredibly disappointed, for the first time she seemed to have been impressed by a boy and was soon a criminal. However, he was not intimidated by her, as he had never seen her before that kidnapping that she was involved in by extreme necessity. The commander asks if she has seen him elsewhere, the answer is negative, better because he didn't even know he was being watched. Marta and Carlos Eduardo arrive in despair.

The family is reunited, Junior hugs his sister crying and promises never to be so teasing again. Pedro is taken to the vehicle in handcuffs. Before being placed inside the vehicle, take the last look in Lana direction, he seemed to want to review and keep in mind those beautiful yellow eyes. The color of gold, to remember them, when he was lonely in prison. She also looks at him from a distance, disappointed, but feels a strange tightness inside her chest, what is this feeling when she sees him go? Would I be penalized for seeing someone so young going to jail? Would he be remorseful for having been, even if indirectly, responsible for his current situation?

Or was she in fact completely in love with him, even though he was aware that he was a criminal? Difficult to answer or explain, he just knew that his heart was tight and his life would never be the same again, at home, after a beautiful shower. And be covered in kisses and hugs by family members and receive the affection of their two and only friends. Lana is lying down, recalling those moments of terror experienced during her abduction, the violence she witnessed. And the deaths of criminals executed right in front of you, and the moment of greatest disappointment.

When he finds out that he is the kidnapper of that beautiful boy that he admires every day at the newsstand when he comes from school and that he spent hours looking out the window. Dreaming one day to get to know you better. He was thrown into prison among criminals of the worst kind, being an honest worker. He lived with dignity all the time.

Respecting the laws and avoiding involvement with trafficking despite having grown up on the hill, where the drug trade is done on the streets without any prohibition. He lived with his mother and younger brothers, worked at the newsstand and read the police pages every day. He saw the end reserved for those who follow the path of marginalization and avoided such error as much as possible, but it seems that he was predestined to fall into that abyss like so many other young people.

Poor devils who lived in the slums, people like them seemed to be born with the evil luck of just being beaten by life, all the paths that follow end in crimes, imprisonment and death.  People da Baixada has no place in society, it is enough to be poor or black in this country to be classified as a criminal, and when he hesitates as he did, that is it. Convicted and imprisoned for kidnapping, he is now among the worst murderers and must follow his orders to the letter. Within a prison you have no choice, either follow the same example as others or die.

There is no place for anyone who wants to act with meekness and humility, the weakest and most reserved end up sacrificed during the rebellions. Brazilian prisons do not specialize those who commit crimes. They are actually schools of trafficking to train criminals and future traffickers. They will be the ones who will have their share of contribution in the sale of a greater number of narcotics. In a country that is already infested with such elements. They are responsible for the slavery of our young people to drugs, who turns child killers into potential. Upon arriving in wing four of the detention house, the eyes of the other older prisoners are intimidating.

But Pedro was born in the Baixada Fluminense, on Morro do Urubu, grew up among the worst species of bandits and, despite never having been convicted before, no would be intimidated by ugly faces. It is aware of how things work and intends to adapt the rules without wavering. The young man is placed with thirty other detainees in a single cell, they are glued to each other, and the atmosphere between them is as dark as possible. Now he saw the reality up close that he used to see only on the pages of the newspapers.

He read while he ran the newsstand and now realizes that the chaos in the prison environment is much worse than what the press says. The chains in this country, in addition to being crowded, for government officials, are nothing but human garbage dumps. During the sunbath in the mornings the risk of being killed increases, the most hateful ones live choosing their victims and kill them in the first rebellion that exists. You have to be alert, be smart, show respect for the house commanders, however, never waver and show fear of anyone. If some of them look at you or are dissatisfied with your presence, they will do the same, you have to fight back.

The, days pass and the hostility increases, verbal aggressions begin to appear that have the purpose of generating more intense conflicts. The kind that allows bullies the chance to physically attack you. Even avoiding this as much as possible, there comes a time that is no longer possible to avoid and the way out is to react. Eliezer, one of the detainees, has been thinking about Pedro since the day he set foot there and, since then, has been looking for a way to provoke him. That day, in particular, the bag was full and the patience reached the limit, when the disaffection mentioned his mother in one of the many hints that he did to get him out of his mind.

Eliezer's worst misfortune is that exactly that morning Pedro learned, through information given to him through one of the jailers, that his mother had recovered from the illness, but then she got worse and would be hospitalized again. The boy is devastated by the news and the detainee's irony catches him in hot blood, then go on to aggression.

If the goal of the one who provoked him was a violent reaction to have the chance to do him some harm, now he will have plenty of reasons to do so, he barely closed his mouth and was soon hit in the chin by such a violent punch that he spread on the floor. Falling over some boxes and getting hurt enough to ignite his ire, and with that, getting up from there in a rage, the two men initially went head to head.

There were very strong punches that were exchanged, as both had great physical strength. The others make a human circle around the fighters and watch, encouraging them to fight more and more. Eliezer was much older than Pedro, his fighting skills were good, but very slow for those who grew up in the alleys and several times he had to defend himself against the older children in order not to be beaten, the opponent was good, but not enough.

He ended up stretched on the floor of the unconscious chain, was knocked out and left. The jailers were prevented from separating the two disaffected and the fight continued until the end without any intervention. It, was the chance for the rookie to show his courage and leave his message to opponents. Alerting everyone that he is not there to be a punching bag for anyone. It is like that in the world of crime, you have to impose morals to receive respect and he knows it very well. From that episode onwards, the looks on him are made differently, the other inmates respect him. Staying inside is losing contact with the outside world.

If he doesn't have an active drug sale transaction out there, it doesn't work, and he doesn't have that. The black drug dealer, a well-known drug dealer on the hill, had been stuck there for a long time, he still saw him as a boy. Playing kites in the alleys, and they made great friends. He, was a friend of his late father. They smoked a lot of marijuana together and practiced several robberies, until at a stop that went wrong, he was killed by the police, Pedro knew well the shameful history of the criminal life that his father led and the tragic end he had. For this reason, he avoided entering into crime as much as possible.

But as it turns out, it came to nothing, because there he was, chatting with one of the largest distributors of drugs and weapons in the Baixada Fluminense. Surrounded by people of the worst kind, it seems that involvement in the world of crime is in the blood. Her father and many other relatives, acquaintances, even some of her friends. This, too, seemed to be his lot. But, just as a boat goes over the waters of a river, E is propelled from side to side of the banks according to the choice of its driver. We still choose which way to go. It is not because the people around us get lost in paths of darkness and complete darkness that we will be forced to follow the same example. He made a serious mistake, hesitated badly, killed people.

Now he was a kidnapper and a murderer, all was not lost, because he had killed criminals who deserved such punishment for the wrongs they had committed. Most of the time, against innocents. Men like Slightly and his cronies will not be missed by society. As for the fact that he was involved in the kidnapping that resulted in his stay there, in that place, it happened for a good reason, which was to save his mother's life. Of course, nothing justifies committing such a crime, but at least it serves to make you different from those who do such things just for pleasure. The hustler on the hill keeps in constant contact with the boy.

And warned the foes that if they touched his protégé, he would have to settle accounts. There the word of that black man almost two meters high was law, no one dared to challenge the bloody. In one of the several conversations they usually have, the black man opens the game and reveals to his new friend his plans to escape from there. The idea was to take advantage of the entry and exit of a delivery truck that usually went there every Tuesday, he had already talked to the driver and the assistant, they would get under the vehicle. And hold on tight to the hardware, since there was enough height for such a feat, and they would leave the prison without being noticed by the guards.

The drivers of the truck had no choice, Devil Vulture commanded the traffic outside. And had the means to erase whoever opposed his wishes and his men threatened the two workers, forcing them to cooperate. A few days later, it was time to act. The plan was individual, no other detainee would be aware, the drug dealer decided to share it only with Pedro, who accepted and went on to the opportunity. It was ten o'clock at night, time that prison houses receive or deliver parcels. The truck from a cleaning company came to pick up the trash that day. Accumulated throughout the previous week and parks near the courtyard, where prisoners sunbathe. One of the jailers, paid to facilitate everything, left the small gate that opened towards the rubbish dump open.

The two of them, instead of going to the courtyard, turn aside and go to the meeting point, they stay under the truck at the exact moment of leaving. Holding onto the hardware and holding on to the hardware. They can be taken out of the prison. After traveling a distance, the car stops and they go to the top, are driven for two kilometers and descend. Another vehicle is waiting for them to continue their journey. As they approach the city, they separate, and each goes to his side.

But first the dealer tells his new friend where he will be from now on, running his dirty business and invites him to visit him in the future. It intends to offer you deals that are advantageous for both. But what really matters to Pedro is seeing his mother again, he needs to find a way to go to the hospital without showing it. As the escape took place only a few hours ago, there would still be time to go there without risking being captured.

For the alert had not yet been given to the police. So, it would be all right. He passed the shack, spoke to the brothers and went to see the crown, after obtaining from them the necessary information on where it would be. In the conversation they had, Mrs. Sandra demanded explanations from her son for being accused of kidnapping:

  — How did you get here?

  — I ran away from the prison with a friend

  — And since when a thug is friends with someone

  — It's just the way of talking

  — I have been working as a convict all these years to prevent you and your brothers from getting involved in the middle of these bandits and look what happened, today I see my oldest son involved with kidnapping

   — Sorry, Crown, for embarrassing you, but God knows I did it for a good cause

   — Good cause, Pedro? And is there a good cause that leads someone to commit crimes?

   — Of course, saving one's mother's life is one of them

   — What are you talking about?

   — Crown, the doctors at the hospital said that you were very ill and needed to be transferred urgently to a specialized clinic or you would die. I ran to all sides, knocked on the door of everyone I knew and nothing. Nobody could or did not want to help me. The only one who wanted to do something in my favor was Slightly

  — Wow, son, that criminal?

  — And what did you want me to do, let you die?

  — Maybe my time has come, let it happen, but don't get involved with that bandit!

  — Well, now it's too late to scold me, I've already screwed myself

  — I'm fine, now she'll try to hide you somewhere to avoid being caught, because she won't go to Santos to spend some time with Maria, she is alone and needs company

  — True, Crown, I hadn't thought about it, but after all this she will still want to receive me at her house

  — Your aunt is an elderly woman, has always lived isolated from the rest of the world and certainly does not even know what happened here

  — Okay, I'll go over there and see how things are
